Cryogenic cave carbonates in the Dolomites (northern Italy): insights into Younger Dryas cooling and seasonal precipitation

چکیده

Abstract. In the European Alps, Younger Dryas (YD) was characterised by last major glacier advance, with equilibrium line altitudes being ? 220 to 290 m lower than during Little Ice Age, and also development of rock glaciers. Dating these geomorphic features, however, is associated substantial uncertainties, leading considerable ambiguities regarding internal structure this stadial, which most intensively studied one glacial period. Here, we provide robust physical evidence based on 230Th-dated cryogenic cave carbonates (CCCs) from a located at 2274 a.s.l. in Dolomites northern Italy coupled thermal modelling, indicating that early YD winters were only moderately cold part Alps. More precisely, find mean annual air temperature dropped ? 3 ?C Allerød–YD transition. Our data suggest autumns relatively snow-rich, resulting stable winter snow cover. The latter insulated shallow subsurface allowed interior remain close freezing point (0 ?C) year-round, promoting CCC formation. main phase precipitation 12.2 ka coincided mid-YD transition recorded other archives across Europe. Based modelling propose formation likely slight warming approximately +1 conjunction drier second half YD. These changes triggered Alpine as well ice retreat expansion

Younger Dryas cooling and the Greenland climate response to CO2.

Greenland ice-core δ(18)O-temperature reconstructions suggest a dramatic cooling during the Younger Dryas (YD; 12.9-11.7 ka), with temperatures being as cold as the earlier Oldest Dryas (OD; 18.0-14.6 ka) despite an approximately 50 ppm rise in atmospheric CO(2). Such YD cooling implies a muted Greenland climate response to atmospheric CO(2), contrary to physical predictions of an enhanced high...

Importance of freshwater injections into the Arctic Ocean in triggering the Younger Dryas cooling.

T he cause of past climate change has been the focus of many studies in recent years. Various explanations have been advanced to explain the record of Quaternary climate change identified in sediments on continents, in oceans, and in the ice caps of Greenland and Antarctica. Important in this is the scale of change—both temporal and spatial—and our best records, especially in terms of chronolog...

Hunted gazelles evidence cooling, but not drying, during the Younger Dryas in the southern Levant.

The climatic downturn known globally as the Younger Dryas (YD; ∼12,900-11,500 BP) has frequently been cited as a prime mover of agricultural origins and has thus inspired enthusiastic debate over its local impact. This study presents seasonal climatic data from the southern Levant obtained from the sequential sampling of gazelle tooth carbonates from the Early and Late Natufian archaeological s...

Meltwater routing and the Younger Dryas.

The Younger Dryas--the last major cold episode on Earth--is generally considered to have been triggered by a meltwater flood into the North Atlantic. The prevailing hypothesis, proposed by Broecker et al. [1989 Nature 341:318-321] more than two decades ago, suggests that an abrupt rerouting of Lake Agassiz overflow through the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Valley inhibited deep water formation i...
